I’m a huge fan of peppermint lip balm. I am especially fond of that fresh, tingly feeling you get from using true peppermint oil. Yum.
But when Burt’s Bees got bought out by a bigger company and changed their formula, I knew I had to make my own. And guess what?
I made it BETTER. No joke.
I love it! And my friends love it, too!
My peppermint lip balm is fresh, hydrating, has that distinctive peppermint tingle, and leaves your lips supple and shining!
The ingredients are so good you could eat them! (And one of my friend’s son actually has eaten TWO TUBES of my lip balm, so I have to keep giving her more!)
Best of all, it’s good for you, it costs less than a dollar to make each one—including the tube—and if you have extra ingredients on hand, you can use them to make my homemade deodorant or homemade body butter!
Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe (Makes 12)
Melt shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax in a double boiler on the lowest heat possible. Remove from heat and then add peppermint oil. Pour into tubes and let sit with caps off for 24 hours. Cap and enjoy!
Are you selling these?
I currently only sell them locally for $4 each. Due to shipping, I have a minimum order of quantity 10, plus shipping costs.
I did not realize that Burt’s Bees was bought out. Doesn’t anything remain the way it was? When it is a good product someone else wants it, then proceeds to just change it to junk. Why?
Luckily I am finding I can make all my own stuff and it is always better than what you can buy.
I am a big fan of coconut oil, and all the essential oils.
Question: Does this turn to soup when the temps are high? My homemade (coconut oil based) deoderants and toothpaste have turned to liquid now that the heat of June is upon us. Thanks for the recipe… I do love my burt’s bees and do get upset when brands I love change their ingredients!
Nope! The last two weeks, I’ve been in Phoenix and Las Vegas, with temps well above 106 degrees, and it hasn’t melted in the car yet! My deodorant recipe doesn’t melt either. :)
Quick question on this…what did you use to pour the melted balm into the tubes? I can see this being a little tricky. I can’t wait to try this! Thanks so much for this recipe! :)
A very steady hand. ;)
I love this idea! Gonna try it!
I use duct tape…they make so many new fun tapes now.
what would it take for you to send me a scoby baby? please purdy please!??? i just dont trust random websites!
My friend Hannah is responsible for the Kombucha Kamp website, where she sells SCOBYs. You can trust her. :) http://www.kombuchakamp.com/
cant wait to try this!!!
I seem to be allergic to shea butter…is there anything else that could be used in it’s place?
You could use avocado butter.
Or cocoa butter!
Hi–looks like a great recipe–a couple of different oils that what I’ve used in the past, so I may have to give your recipe a try!
I’m curious about your labels. I like to label our chapsticks (peppermint for me and plain for our girl), but I’ve yet to come up with something that works. I’ve tried ‘regular’ labels, but they peel off right away and the printing wears quickly as well. I’d love to know your secret for such cute labels!
Thanks!
Amber
I bought these labels: http://www.planetlabel.com/labels/product/inkjet-laser/white-photo-gloss-labels-lip-balm-2-0625-x-2-15-rec~white
I designed them in Adobe InDesign and then printed them on an inkjet printer.
Thanks so much!
I printed something up in pages (Mac version of Word) and then put them on with clear packing tape. Took a minute or two to get the sizing right, but worked out great.
