I’m a huge fan of peppermint lip balm. I am especially fond of that fresh, tingly feeling you get from using true peppermint oil. Yum.
But when Burt’s Bees got bought out by a bigger company and changed their formula, I knew I had to make my own. And guess what?
I made it BETTER. No joke.
I love it! And my friends love it, too!
My peppermint lip balm is fresh, hydrating, has that distinctive peppermint tingle, and leaves your lips supple and shining!
The ingredients are so good you could eat them! (And one of my friend’s son actually has eaten TWO TUBES of my lip balm, so I have to keep giving her more!)
Best of all, it’s good for you, it costs less than a dollar to make each one—including the tube—and if you have extra ingredients on hand, you can use them to make my homemade deodorant or homemade body butter!
Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe (Makes 12)
Melt shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax in a double boiler on the lowest heat possible. Remove from heat and then add peppermint oil. Pour into tubes and let sit with caps off for 24 hours. Cap and enjoy!
Just made a batch as little stocking stuffers and to give out to unexpected gift givers. Now I only have two left for me. They turned out to be a huge hit with both family and friends today!
I used to be a fan of Burts Bees prior to the Clorox takeover and the subsequent formula changes. From 1996 through 2010 0r so I wore that beloved lip balm under lip stick, at night- you name it. Now the new improved formula irritates my lips to no end. Thanks a lot, Clorox.
Your recipe has been pure peace of mind. It works beautifully both on chapped lips and as a preventative or just an easy alternative to lipstick/gloss. I adore you for sharing it. Go you!
Hi there! I made a batch and found that the scent of the coconut oil was so strong that although it didn’t entirely overwhelm the essential oils I was using, it definitely was not the scent I was going for. The coconut smells great on its own so I will probably try a batch with no essential oils but would love if I could do some with as well. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
Perhaps you should try a different brand of coconut oil! I’ve found that some brands agree with me and others don’t. My personal favorite I buy organic and unrefined from Mountain Rose Herbs.
My daughter and I just made 2 double batches of this recipe (peppermint & sweet orange) and I love it! So easy too. I used the small sections of a bento box to stand the tubes up in and a baby medicine syringe (6ml/tube)to fill them with. I also have some lip balm pots that are a little bigger than the tubes. We used a few of those too. These will make great Christmas gifts! Next up, hand salve. :)
Hi.
I’m loving your blog. I’ve made your deodorant and think it’s great so I decided to try this recipe and love it too. I’m finding the lip balm a little grainy, any idea what’s causing this?
I’m not sure what could be causing it. Perhaps heating it too high when melting is causing the problem. You could try melting the ingredients on a lower temperature.
Oh, I never thought of heating it too hot being the problem. I was thinking that I needed to heat it longer, but I’ll try melting it over a lower heat next time. Thanks so much.
Shea butter gets grainy when it gets too hot. What I have done is melt everything down first on low temp using double boiler method and then add the shea butter last.
Cooling shea butter quickly in the fridge also prevents graniness!
We have a tree nut allergy, so no sweet almond oil for us. :-( What would you recommend to use in its place? Thanks!!!
Olive oil.
Or any liquid oil will work!
Coconut oil, sugar and whatever essential oils you like
for scent. This is certainly the best scrub ever, great for face and physique.
Hi can you tell me how many tubes this recipe makes?
12
Can you replace beeswax with anything?
Carnuba Wax could work: http://bit.ly/15pkyRX
How would you put a tint of color into that? Any ideas of what would make the best coloring agent – natural, of course?
You could use hibiscus powder: http://bit.ly/1c2BuRZ
How much hibiscus powder would you recommend adding to the recipe you provided? Thanks! Love this recipe :-)
I would start with 1/2 tsp and add more as needed.
i’m growing fresh peppermint~could i use it instead & how would you try it??
Fresh peppermint probably wouldn’t be strong enough. I would definitely stick to using peppermint oil.
