Mine didn’t set up either. I used gelatin. :(
Has anyone tried this with almond milk?
I don’t know if it is similar enough, but I have a lot of potato starch to use… would that be an acceptable substitute for the arrowroot? If so, would it be a 1-1 swap or might the proportions be different? Thanks – can’t wait for a cool evening to try to hot chocolate! I can make the pudding any ol’ day.
No idea. I’ve never used potato starch. Let me know how it turns out!
Mine still looks like hot chocolate. Do i need to put it in the fridge for it to thicken?
Refrigeration isn’t necessary. There is something else that is causing it not to thicken. I’m not sure. I’ve never had that issue.
First let me just say OMG-this stuff is so awesome! It reminds me of the real chocolate pudding I had when I was a kid. I finally got around to making it and have made it atleast twice a week since. LOL The 2nd time around I substituted organic corn starch and added in a heaping tablespoon of gelatin and it came out perfectly creamy. Thank you for sharing this wonderful addicting recipe.
So glad you’re enjoying it! I love pudding. And being lazy. ;)
Okay, I need help! I have tried to make this twice and both times have just made…slightly grainy hot chocolate. Sadly I must need more detailed directions! Is this supposed to be heated on the stove? Or not? And when do you add the arrowroot? I made the hot chocolate and then added in the arrowroot and it just made weird hot chocolate that made two layers and solidified in our mugs after a few minutes. Then I thought that I was just supposed to add the arrowroot to the original recipe and heat it all together, and that didn’t do anything either. I feel silly, but how exactly did you make this thicken?
Okay, so first, make the hot chocolate. The version with an egg in it. Obviously, hot chocolate is made on the stove. You keep the heat at JUST a simmer and gradually whisk in 1/4 cup of arrowroot powder. Keep whisking until it starts to thicken.
How much gelatin?
I just whisk in 1 tsp at a time until it thickens. You also need to let it cool down a bit before whisking it in.
You don’t know how happy seeing this post made me. I love pudding– but now that I’m eating cleaner Jello isn’t an option anymore. So happy dancing with pudding and hubby LOVES hot chocolate– so you’ve made our family UBER happy. :) I will be back often to your website– you had me at the pic of San Fran!!!
I SO know what you mean! Haha. Glad to have you here! :)
Could I use gelatin instead of arrowroot powder?
Yes! That is what I use in my banana pudding recipe! I use this brand: http://amzn.to/YRKq8k
Umm…. Your recipe is missing. Can you repost?
No, it’s not. ;) It’s just so short you missed it.
I had to comment because that made me laugh…I did the same thing and had to scroll back up…lolol
