My completely independent review of the Tuft & Needle non-toxic mattress.
I can’t believe myself right now. I got a king bed this week. I’ve been wanting to replace my mattress since ever since I discovered this mattress company called “Tuft & Needle” back in 2014. But I didn’t NEED to replace my mattress back in 2014. I’ve just been waiting and waiting….waiting for the right time.
Well, a friend of mine ended up needing a mattress. So….seemed like a good time. Ha! See? Here she is after we loaded it up in her truck.
So now, she has my queen mattress, and I made the decision to upgrade to a king-sized Tuft & Needle non-toxic mattress. The difference between a queen and a king is 16 inches in width.
I thought to myself…16 inches of bed to lie on and work on and throw stuff on…or keep the 16 inches of floor space? I thought to myself…I’m not using this 3 feet of floor space between the bed and the wall EXCEPT to walk over there to make the bed. I can eat up 16 inches of this with MORE BED.
Except for I didn’t anticipate how much more SPACE that actually was. I feel like a tiny tiny princess in a gigantic king size bed. And it’s a WALK from one side to the other when making the bed.
But I’m serious when I say I feel like ROYALTY. The Tuft & Needle mattress is the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on in my entire life!
The first time I heard of Tuft & Needle was in 2014, when the Queen size mattress was still 5 inches thick and $400. The prices have gone up since then, but so has the quality of the bed and the thickness (10″ now!).
The reason this bed stood out to me was not ONLY because it became the #1 rated mattress on Amazon, but also because it’s an entirely non-toxic mattress!
What are mattresses made of?
Several years ago, when I was searching for the cause of my various autoimmune issues, I learned that mattresses are highly toxic. Great. I thought. Just great. Even my mattress could be killing me. But you have to pick and choose your battles, and that was one I just didn’t feel like tackling at the time. Instead, I changed my diet and found upper cervical chiropractic care and was able to reverse my health issues and find healing through those channels.
However, I did learn quite a bit about what goes into a mattress. And I learned about “off-gassing.”
Most mattresses contain several different layers of polyurethane or latex foam, along with springs and cotton batting. Other ingredients include: VOCs, flame retardants, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and more! Exciting! Except not. Because every time we climb into bed, change the sheets, or disturb the mattress in anyway, it releases these toxic chemicals. It’s called “off-gassing,” and it happens regardless of contact; as long as it’s in your home, it’s affecting your air quality.
Besides air quality and breathing in potentially harmful chemicals every night, the glue that holds all 93874 layers of your standard mattress together is not only toxic, but makes sleeping HOT! All that glue prevents air-flow. HOTTTTTTTT.
Also. Chemical flame retardants. All foam mattresses must be treated or protected with fire retardants, which are associated with reduced IQ, infertility, as well as thyroid and endocrine disruption.
Yikes! But wait!
I have good news.
- The Tuft & Needle non-toxic mattress isn’t going to off-gas you to death!
- It has just two layers of foam, which means only one layer of glue.
- The glue that is used is GreenGuard Certified, which means “that a product has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.”
- The foam that is used is synthetic and CertiPUR certified, which means it’s free of formaldehyde, heavy metals, flame retardants, ozone depleters, phthalates, and are low VOC.
- Even though it doesn’t use chemical flame retardants, it’s still fire resistant due to a specially made flame resistant fire sock. The sock goes around the entire mattress and is made of a rayon-polyester blend infused with silica. It’s Oeko-Tex 100 Standard certified.
So what does it feel like?
I would describe the Tuft & Needle as supportive. I don’t like firm mattresses, and I don’t like super soft mattresses either. I like something in between. The Tuft & Needle is neither firm nor soft. I would go so far as to say it’s neutral.
It has give without feeling sinky. It is springy without feeling uneven. It is firm without feeling hard. It is literally the most comfortable mattress.
The very first night I slept on a Tuft & Needle, I had the best night of sleep I’ve ever had in my life.
I’m not even kidding.
This is a mattress I’ve had bookmarked on my computer, saved in my phone, written down on a notepad somewhere for almost 3 years.
