Have you ever had a Jack Rose cocktail? They are delicious, let me tell you. They are made with Apple Brandy, grenadine, and fresh lemon juice. But Jack Rose’s are only delicious if you make them with homemade grenadine, and not that yucky High Fructose Corn Syrup, Red #40 abomination they try to pass off as grenadine.
Grenadine is pomegranate syrup, and making homemade grenadine is super easy! All you need is pomegranate juice, a little sugar or honey, and a touch of lemon. Reduce a little on the stove, and then zing! You’ve got a beautiful deep red slightly sweet, slightly tart cocktail syrup.
I make my syrup with less sugar than other recipes call for by at least half.
How to make homemade grenadine
- 16 oz pure pomegranate juice
- 3/4 cup organic sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
Heat the pomegranate juice on the stove until it starts to boil. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Dissolve sugar over 5 minutes time, then add lemon juice. Store in the fridge for up to a month. (Freeze if you need to keep it longer.)
