Throughout history, poets and prose writers, lyricists and balladeers have written about the beauty of woman. Her intriguing eyes, delicate skilled hands, and, of course, her magnificent shining tresses falling gently on shoulders.
Such hair is the pride of she who wears it. But it doesn’t come without effort, does it?
Long before commercial hair products were available in every supermarket, we made our hair strong and shining with juicy summer fruits, sea grasses, and other nourishing plants. We cheer ourselves up by altering our hairstyle and caring for our appearance, inspecting our locks in the mirror. Learning to treat your tresses is a skill that any woman can master.
All recipes can be doubled, as needed, if you have more hair.
1. Kefir / Soured Raw Milk Hair Mask
Raw milk is rich in calcium and dairy proteins that can restore, strengthen, and protect hair. Simply, work the kefir into the hair or rinse with soured raw milk. Then wrap hair in a towel for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, rinse hair with warm water.
2. Cabbage & Peach Juice Tonic
This juice mixture is great for strengthening weak or brittle hair, as well as helping to reverse hair loss. Whisk together the following: 2 TBSP cabbage juice, 2 TBSP peach juice, the white of one egg, 1 TBSP of cognac, and 1 TBSP honey. Distribute mixture evenly along roots and use a wide-tooth comb to brush down to tips. Cover with a towel for two hours. After 2 hours, rinse with warm water. (Optional for oily hair: dissolve 2 TBSP of dry mustard in 32 oz. of warm water and rince with this instead.)
3. Potato Mask
Wash, peel, and finely grate two small-medium potatoes. In a bowl, whisk together the yolk of one egg, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp honey, and 1 tsp of sea salt. Add the finely grated potato to the liquid mixture, separate hair into locks, and then carefully apply to hair. Wrap hair in a warm towel and leave in place for 30 minutes. Rinse with a mixture of 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar diluted in at least 24 oz. of water.
A potato mask is good for all hair types, and will make the hair shiny and silky afterward.
For oily hair, mix grated potato and its water with soured milk.
For dry hair, mix grated potato with an egg yolk and honey and apply to slightly damp hair and scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes, wash with warm water only and let air dry (no hair dryer).
4. Apple Mask
Finely grate a large apple, apply to hair, and wrap tightly in a towel for 30 minutes. Wash, as usual, and air dry. Apples can be used to relieve head itch and prevent split ends. For best results, it should be done twice a week.
5. Carrot Mask
Finely grate a large carrot and put into a bowl. Add 5 drops of castor oil, 1 tsp raw cream, some strong tea leaves of choice, and mix together. Divide hair into pieces and apply evenly from roots to ends. Wrap tightly with a warm towel. After 50 minutes, rinse hair 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar diluted in at least 24 oz. of water.
If you prefer, you can make a carrot shampoo and use that to wash with before rinsing with vinegar. To make the carrot shampoo, whisk together the yolk of one egg, 1 TBSP olive oil, and 1/4 cup of carrot juice.
Carrots are great for strengthening and accelerating hair growth.
6. Beet Rinse
Beets can be used to combat dandruff. Peel and slice 2 lbs of beets. Then soak in 2 quarts of cold water. Cover and set aside for 3-4 days. After 3-4 days, filter through a cloth and use the water to rinse hair after washing.
7. Parsley Balm
Parsley is good for treating dandruff. In a double boiler, combine 1/4 cup of olive oil with 1 TBSP of parsley seed and heat on medium-low for 30 minutes. Cool balm, and then filter out seeds. Rub into the scalp 2-3 hours before washing. To effectively treat dandruff, do this every two days for a month.
8. Banana Mask
Bananas are excellent for use in both dry and oily hair. They contain natural oil and vitamins that strengthen hair, prevent split ends, shine and soften the tresses.
For oily hair, mash a banana and mince the peel; then mix with 2 tsp lemon juice and 3 TBSP of raw milk.
For dry hair, mash a banana with the yolk of one egg, 2 TBSP of raw cream, and 1 tsp of honey.
Apply the mixture to the hair, from roots to ends, and then wrap tightly in a warm towel. After 30 minutes, wash as usual.
9. Coconut & Avocado Mask
Coconut milk mixed with avocado makes for a great deep conditioner. Both are rich in fatty acids, vitamins, and proteins–all which act to strengthen hair and prevent split ends, as well as soften and shine. The mask also protects hair from sun damage due to UV rays. In a bowl, mash one ripe avocado with 1 TBSP of honey, and then mix with one cup of full fat coconut milk. Apply evenly to hair and then wrap tightly with warm towel for 40 minutes. After ward, wash as usual.
10. Honey Treatment
Honey naturally holds onto water, which makes it excellent for conditioning, as well as adding shine. Honey, as you may know, is rich in vitamins and minerals, which help hair to grow.
Mix together 1/2 cup honey and 2 TBSP olive oil in a small saucepan on low heat. Wet hair with hot or warm water and then evenly apply honey mixture to hair. Wrap tightly in a warm towel for 30 minutes, then wash as usual.
11. Papaya Mask
Papaya helps to soften and shine your tresses. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes that both nourish and thoroughly clean hair.
Peel and remove the seeds from one papaya. Toss into blender, along with 1/2 cup of kefir, plain yogurt, or raw cream. Wet your hair and then apply mask to scalp, working it down to the tips. Wrap tightly in a warm towel for 30 minutes, then wash as usual.
12. Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise is excellent for deep conditioning and making hair very soft and shiny. Mix together 1/2 cup of room temperature mayonnaise, 1/4 cup olive oil, and 1 large egg yolk. Apply evenly to hair and then wrap tightly with a towel for 10-20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water only. Your hair may remain somewhat oily looking after this, but don’t worry. It will continue conditioning your hair. If you do this first thing in the morning, you can rinse it again in the evening, and it will be good to go for the next day.
